Bluesky Design Services like the majority of our colleagues and partners continues to embrace new ways of working during this second national lock down period.

Our end user, client engagement and design team collaboration is still continuing through the ‘virtual’ world, with ‘covid safe’ site visits with the relevant PPE when required.

We are an innovative industry and it’s been great to see how everyone working together on our current projects have come together to keep these schemes moving forward. So, it’s business as (sort of) usual and we are responding to all new client enquiries.

With the recent Government announcements on its commitment to public spending in key infrastructure areas – Education, Health and Bluelight – a great way to get your project moving forward quickly without the need for long procurement routes is via the NHS Business Services Framework. Bluesky Design Services designed the new state-of-the-art Health Centre in the heart of Little Hulton, Salford. We worked in collaboration with Salford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), Salford Primary Care Together (SPCT), Manchester Road East Surgery, Dearden Avenue Medical Practice and Cherry Medical Centre on this project.

Our £4.6m BREEAM Excellence design for the Little Hulton Health Centre was completed in September 2020 and is now fully functional. The facility consists of 18 contemporary consulting and interview rooms, 5 modern treatment and community group rooms, administration spaces and a car park offering plentiful spaces for all customers.

The site hosts services such as Podiatry, District Nurse appointments, Mental Health services and a serves as base for local services for community Midwives and Children’s Health. The new Health Centre will allow healthcare provisions to expand to meet the increased demands within the local community.

Alison Quinn, Director said: “It is great to see our design for Little Hulton Health Centre in Salford come to life. Over the past 15 years Bluesky have successfully delivered over 40 health care schemes, which range from new build designs of large community based primary care facilities and acute hospitals as well as mixed use wellbeing centres through to refurbishment and remodelling of small GP practices. Dan left his Part 1 graduate role with Bluesky in July 2019 and returned to University to work towards getting his Masters in Architecture. The team at Bluesky are extremely happy to have Dan back on the team to support our design solutions and to enable Dan to gain more experience in the Architectural workplace. We are committed in supporting and developing graduates of Architecture and Architectural Technology courses at either Part 1 or 2 of the RIBA qualification stages. Our mentoring scheme will help graduates to gain their qualifications and set them up for their careers and is part of our Social Value commitments.

Dan said:  ‘It is Great to be back in the office! Having had the experience to do my part 1 with Bluesky was amazing and now the chance to further my skills and put them into practice within a working environment is an invaluable opportunity to me. As well as this, it’s refreshing to see familiar friendly faces in the workplace. I am more than grateful for the opportunity from the team and I look forward to working together with everyone.’

Bluesky’s mentoring scheme bridges the gap between university and architecture in practice. Part 1 students will spend time with our Architectural and Architectural Technologist team to help develop their knowledge and understanding of RIBA work stages.

Every student is partnered with a mentor from the start of their placement to provide guidance and support, as well as giving the students challenging and diverse work opportunities which will go on to help them in the future.

Catherine has been working for Bluesky as a Part 1 student over the last 12 months and leaves at the end of the month.

Catherine Said: ‘My time with Bluesky Architects has been invaluable to my learning in architectural practice. The experience has been extremely rewarding from the offset and I believe I have grown as an individual throughout my time. The last 12 months have allowed me to gain vital experience, integrating with architects and technicians, and developing my skill set in digital software and professional skills. I have particularly gained a greater understanding of the RIBA work stages and the design and build process.

Being part of the Bluesky team has enabled me to be supported and mentored in all aspects of office life. Throughout the year I have been guided and so forth able to significantly develop my skills in all aspects of working in an architectural practice. I have been taught new techniques and methods of designing, modelling and communicating which has helped me to grow my self-confidence in my abilities.  I have experienced CPD events, meetings, public consultations, and site visits throughout my time, and I have really benefitted from being involved in life outside of the office. These opportunities have enhanced my knowledge of the full design process.

Overall, I cannot thank my colleagues enough for their help throughout the past year. I have been given opportunities to expand my skills and develop my understanding of the architectural industry. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and I am leaving Bluesky confident that working here has equipped me in the best possible way for returning to University for my Masters.’

Alison Quinn, Director said:

“Catherine has been a great creative addition to the team across our health, education, residential and commercial projects, and the team wishes her well for her on-going studies.

As part of our social value targets, we are committed in supporting and developing graduates of Architecture and Architectural Technology courses at either Part 1 or 2 of the RIBA qualification stages. Our mentoring scheme will help graduates to gain their qualifications and set them up for their careers in this industry.”

Alison has been with Bluesky for just over 17 years and was previously awarded the Women in Construction Architect of the Year.

Alison has over 20+ years’ experience leading architectural design projects across the blue light, commercial, education, healthcare and residential sectors and more recently within the specialist ballistics and tactical training facilities arena on behalf of both Principal Contractors or via direct appointments with the procuring client.

Alison’s commercial background ensures our design teams approach to project delivery focuses on creative design solutions and a client centred approach to design. We achieve this by listening to what our clients project needs are and advising throughout the design where budgets can be maximised, and cost savings made without comprising the design outcome.

The Bluesky team are all fully trained on REVIT, BIM processes and COBie data requirements utilising these technologies and systems to deliver what our clients want, when they want it.

Now more than ever we are embracing technology to keep projects moving forward through ‘virtual’ client engagement as our team continue to deliver projects working at home.

In these unusual times our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our team, who are being regularly updated on the measures that have been put in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

All our staff are effectively working from home and we have provided all the necessary support and technology to allow them to continue to work productively and provide our normal level of service for our Clients across the education, health, blue light and commercial sectors.

Whilst face-to-face meetings are not going to be possible for a while, we are using technology to continue our client and end user engagement effectively.

It’s been great to see everyone in our industry adapt and make changes to the way we work so that we can follow Government guidance and keep our teams and others as safe as possible during these unprecedented challenges.

We look forward to seeing all of our friends in the industry in a non-virtual environment soon!
