Adaptable designs for off-site construction solutions supported by Government for the NHS

Creative design solutions for off-site construction projects has been an area of our design team’s expertise over the last seven years, delivering 39 primary, secondary and SEND schools across the UK on behalf of offsite specialist The McAvoy Group and Department of Education.

Combined with our traditional construction experience across the health sector where we have provided design and healthcare planning expertise to develop a suite of exemplar primary care room standards to support the development of 36 healthcare projects for six NHS Trust areas, we see some great opportunities for healthcare projects with the Government’s announcement to increase the use of offsite construction solutions for hospitals and healthcare projects as part of its ambitious hospital building programme over the next five year. Chris Russell, Managing Director of Blue Sky Architects said ‘Good design, innovative use of standardised components and efficiencies in project delivery timescales combined high quality offsite construction methods continue to offer great value for projects investing in public infrastructure without compromising on design quality.’

The Blue sky design team provide lead architectural design services across education, health, blue light and commercial sectors dealing with challenging, complex projects where quality cannot be compromised but value for money much be met. Future proofing and adaptability are a key part of our design solutions.

Following a very successful 2019 of charity challenges and events raising money for Macmillan and Cornwall Air Ambulance, we are delighted to announce that following a staff vote, we will be supporting two charities during 2020 – Mustard Tree and The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity (Birth and Baby Appeal).

Mustard Tree have an established track record of supporting people across Greater Manchester in poverty and facing homelessness. They create opportunities for people to help themselves through providing practical support, friendship, connections into work, improvements to health and wellbeing plus new experiences to encourage aspiration.

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity have received NHS funding to bring improvements, which will help them take a big step towards improving care for women giving birth and newborn babies who need to stay in hospital for specialist care. Funds raised through the Cornwall Birth and Baby appeal will mean they can supplement the NHS investment and provide equipment that will enhance the maternity and neonatal areas.

Bluesky are proud to announce that we have retained (and upgraded!) our Investors in People accreditation level.

Following the latest assessment, Bluesky have been awarded IIP Gold.

We believe that this award is thoroughly deserved and demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the group to developing talent and staying at the forefront of the technological advances within the industry.

We are delighted with the results of the assessment and would like to thank all of the staff who participated.

“Blue Sky is an excellent employer and fabulous place to work. Open communications, great leadership, extensive support, relaxed working culture and strong team spirit, and the drive to be ahead of sector developments has a particularly positive impact.”

Well done team!

We are very excited to be awarded this contract and can’t wait to start designing this project and to work closely with The McAvoy Group again on another project architecturaldesign modularbuilding

Here is what McAvoys said: We have been awarded a £5.5m contract by the Department for Education for the offsite construction of a new three-storey Art, Design and Technology Centre at The Deepings School in Peterborough. This will create an exemplar education environment to reflect the academy’s vision and will replace a 1970s teaching block that we will then demolish. Designed by Bluesky Design Services, the building is located at the heart of the school so using an offsite approach will give the school the huge benefit of reduced time on site and enhanced health and safety. The centre will be built offsite to the highest quality standards. offsite schools construction schoolbuildings smartoffsite

Bluesky’s mentoring scheme bridges the gap between university and architecture in practice. Part 1 students will spend time with our Architectural and Architectural Technologist teams to help develop their knowledge and understanding of RIBA work stages.

Every student is partnered with a mentor from the start of their placement to provide guidance, support, as well as giving the students challenging and diverse work opportunities which will go on to help them in the future.

Dan has been working for Bluesky as a Part 1 student over the last 12 months, leaves at the end of the month – hear what Dan has to say about his placement.

‘My time at Bluesky Architects has been extremely rewarding, mixing with architects of different experiences along with interior designers and technicians has helped me to grow as an individual and increased my skills significantly over the last 12 months. I have gained vital experience to carry forward in my career, not only for office life but for the professional side of my skill set, gaining a deeper understanding into the RIBA work stages along with broadening my digital skills with core software as well as new software.

Key aspects of my last 12 months have been the friends I have made at the company, all the staff have been amazing and helpful especially my mentor, Ranbir. They have guided me through the last year and helped me with whatever I have needed help with as well as teaching me methods and techniques of designing, presenting, communicating and modelling. Another key aspect has been going to meetings, consultations, site visits, factory visits and generally seeing what goes on outside of the office. This has allowed me to have a better understanding of the design/construction process.

Overall this past year has been a great experience for me, I have been given the space to expand my skills and increase my awareness of the architectural industry. I feel Bluesky and my colleagues have set me up well to go back to university and complete my Masters qualification to the best of my abilities.’

Alison Quinn, Deputy Managing Director said:

We are committed in supporting and developing graduates of Architecture and Architectural Technology courses at either Part 1 or 2 of the RIBA qualification stages. Our mentoring scheme will help graduates to gain their qualifications and set them up for their careers.

As we say farewell to Dan, we are also welcoming two Part 1 students from Manchester School Of Architecture and John Moores University who will be undertaking their Part 1 experience with us over the next 12 months’

Bluesky are proud to have worked for the McAvoy Group on the design of a stunning new 630-place primary school offsite for Concordia Academy in Romford which was delivered as part of McAvoy’s £8.2m design and build contract.

The design of the 2,972m2 three-form entry free school has created an exemplar learning environment for local children, reflecting the academy’s vision and ethos, increasing parental choice, and providing a valuable facility for the community.

Bluesky Design Services, part of the Equity Solutions Group, are never afraid to take on a challenge, especially when that challenge means raising money for charities close to our hearts.

On Saturday 20th July, we will be taking on a mega hike in a bid to raise much needed funds for the two charities we are supporting this year  – Macmillan Cancer  Support and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust.

A team of intrepid trekkers from across the Equity Solutions Group, along with their family, friends and even pets will take on an 18 mile walk in the Peak District.  The guided walk will begin at Castleton in the Peak District and take us along the Limestone Way and onto the Great Ridge.  We will then take in 5 miles of the beautiful skyline before heading down into Edale, over Mam Tor and then back into Castleton for well-deserved refreshments.

We have raised a fantastic amount for our charities so far, with various bake sales, dress-down days and other events, but we are really hoping that this challenge gets us closer to our target.

If you would like to support Team Equity, you can donate using the link below:

Thank you all for your support – we will be sure to share our pictures after we have completed our challenge.
